Amstelredamme, meaning a dam in the river Amstel, emanated the city’s name. True to its name origin, the river Amstel halts at the heart of the city. The name Amsterdam was first used on October 27, 1275 in a certificate which depicts citizens exempted from paying bridge toll for helping in the construction of the bridge including a barrage across the Amstel. In 1327, the name was changed into Aemsterdam.
7,000 historic buildings belonging to Amsterdam, the most extensive historic place in Europe, can be seen at the Old Center.
