Amstelredamme, meaning a dam in the river Amstel, emanated the city’s name. True to its name origin, the river Amstel halts at the heart of the city. The name Amsterdam was first used on October 27, 1275 in a certificate which depicts citizens exempted from paying bridge toll for helping in the construction of the bridge including a barrage across the Amstel. In 1327, the name was changed into Aemsterdam.
7,000 historic buildings belonging to Amsterdam, the most extensive historic place in Europe, can be seen at the Old Center. History would prove to be the legible designer of this place as you witness the ambience of Medieval Ages designed buildings that lined the streets of Nieuwmarkt. Late-medieval surrounded courtyard of Begijnhof struck visitors in awe of beauty and admiration to its architecture. A 17th century draw bridge called Magere Brug presents an inviting view overlooking a river and traditional Dutch architecture contrived canal houses, repositories, churches and chateaus.
