Dancing With the Wind

Guincho Beach has an imaculate reputation as one of the best places for windsurfing in Europe. The Windersufing World Cup contest was held here in the 1990s. It is also one of the most beautiful beaches around the Lisboa region. This beach became famous in 1969 when a sequence from the James Bond movie was filmed there. It is said it has not changed at all since.

Ideal Surf Conditions

The Guincho Beach is located 5 kilometers from the town of Cascais, on Portugal's Estroil coast. Once in the District of Lisbon you can get to the beach using any transportation. There are no restricted areas. The summers are long and hot and the winters short but they come with very strong winds. You must know the water and the winds, which are usually cold and a wetsuit is required for these conditions. The North West swell creates high waves between one to five meters. The beach does not have shells, rocks or grass mixed with the sand. It is only filled with fine, soft sand.

James Bond is a Surfer?

Because of the exquisite weather conditions of this particular beach many contests and festivals involving windsurfing and fun boarding are held regularly. The Portuguese National Surfing and the Body Boarding Championships are just a few of them. August is a hot month considering the weather but also the busiest, considering events organized.

The natural beauty of the Guincho Beach was immortalized in 1969 when the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service was recorded. In the scene, James Bond was rescuing Contessa Teresa de Vicenzo suicide and got rid of two attackers.

Relax, Take it Easy..

This is a fully facilitated and life guarded beach, so you can bring your little ones without having to worry. It is also an ideal place for small competitions between friends or just some relaxation windsurfing to clear your mind and get your body into shape. Even if it seems an area mostly for professionals, it is not. Anyone can learn while the winds are not too strong. Its proximity to the town of Cascais allows you to take a lunch or dinner brake at the restaurants and cafes there. If you are planning a longer trip, you must know that almost one kilometer away from the beach there is a camping site called Orbitur Point or you can stay at hotels in the small town or Lisboa.
The Guincho Beach is a great destination for sport amateurs and professionals. There are not many sun bathing or free swimming opportunities but the wind is perfect most of the times for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Visit the Guincho Beach for its particularities and for a different experience compared with the other regular beaches. The water there will lead your board to the highest wave and back as long as you like.
