If someone were to describe paradise, they would probably include in their description wild birds, tropical fish, rare orchids and virgin forests. Mahe Island is a spot discovered relatively recently fitting this description. Here, the lack of development has left the species and plants endemic and of raw, untouched beauty. The capital city called after the queen of England, Victoria is said to be the smallest in the world and the giant tortoise is on the coat of arms. Besides its picturesque charm, the island is also famous for its well preserved traditions with heavy African influence encountered in all form of arts whether it is poetry, music or dance. Get inspired through the Seychelles art and discover unusual instruments like the makalapo, the zez or the bom.
Situated in the North East part, Mahe with its 70 beaches is the main, largest island of the Seychelles. Along the center of the 17 miles long and only 2 to 5 miles wide island runs a chain of mountains with the highest point Morne Seychellois of 930 meters (3050 feet). The mountains are made of granite, they are covered in virgin forests and endemic plants and the narrow ring of land surrounding them is almost flat. Because of the diversity found here, 60 percent of the island is declared National Park.
The South and West part of Mahe Island is covered with remote beaches; the ones in the East are slightly more developed while the ones situated in the North part are ideal for both sunbathing and lodging.
The name of the capital city is not the only reminder that Mahe is a former colony of Britain but also are the traditional afternoon tea and driving on the left side.
This island of the Seychelles is very appealing to nature lovers, scientists, photographers and everybody looking for a place full of color where the sun is shining above the sea. Visit the National History Museum or walk through the Botanical Gardens to discover the uniqueness of the Jellyfish Tree or the carnivorous “pitcher plant”. Relax in a beautiful scenery and listen to the strong traditional rhythms while watching the locals dance the moutia around the fire, chanting prayers. Mahe Island is also very appealing to pirate fans because it is rumored that somewhere in the North part of the island lies a legendary pirate treasure buried.
Mahe Island is a tropical paradise truly unique because of its natural delicacy. This hot destination can suit those looking for an escape in order to relax, it can fulfill a honeymoon dream and it can represent a new adventure. No matter how you picture paradise, this Seychelles island has the potential to fit that description.
