Archeological Importance and the 16th century Manhattan of the Desert

A former part of the Ottoman Empire, the country with its name translated as “the South” or “felicity”, Yemen is the only state in the Arabian Peninsula to have a purely republican form of government. Combining mountains, desert and over 200 islands, the country is as diverse in topography as in cultural influences. Famous because archeologists discovered dinosaur footprints 48 kilometers North from the capital city Sana’a, Yemen is a destination of interest when it comes to culture, ancient civilization influences, natural wonders and scientific research. The Dragon’s Blood Tree and the Soqotri language spoken in the Socotra Archipelago make Yemen a unique spot on Earth.

Admire the impressive “skyscrapers” in the so called “Manhattan of the Desert”, the Old Walled City of Shibam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site individualized through its fortified wall made of mud and straw. Enter the capital city Sana’a, situated in a breathtaking environment (7000 feet altitude), a former major Islamic center incorporating 103 mosques or dare to visit the old town of Aden placed in a crater of an extinct volcano.
