A summer resort born out of a man's dreams and dedication, Piriapolis has become a destination frequented for its amazing nature, opulent hotels as well as for its active nightlife. Initially called El Balneario del Porvenir, the Spanish name for the ''Resort of the Future'', the scenic destination on the coast of Rio de la Plata has changed its name honoring its creator.
Modern visionary Castles
If you already booked your flight to Uruguay's capital city Montevideo, then you need to know that Piriapolis lies about 105 kilometers (65 miles) to its East. Located in the Maldonado department, the summer resort town with a population of about 7,900 people offers amazing entertainment opportunities on the coast of Rio de la Plata.
The first buildings in the ''Resort of the Future'' were founded in 1893 by Francisco Piria. The man who bought these Uruguayan seashores has invested in a personal residence, several hotels as well as a scenic train line between the port and the highest point situated in the hills nearby (10 kilometers from the center). Among the inspired architectural constructions, the Castle of Piria is classified as an early proponent of Modernism while the Argentino Hotel built between 1920-1930 was the biggest one in South America at that time.
Castles of Sand
The closest seashore is called Playa Centro de Piriapolis, a popular choice among the ones who like water sports or being active barefoot in the fine golden powder. The Playa San Francisco y Punta Fria has a name underlining the closeness to the Atlantic, its waves are perfect for surf; an opposite to if, the Playa Grande is the seashore for calm swimming and adventurous diving. Playa Hermosa gained fame because of its spectacular sunsets while Punta Negra is the spot you are looking for if you are thinking secluded.
A Hilly Zodiacal Sign
Piriapolis is also known for its hilly surroundings. In the range called Cuchilla Grande, the Cerro Pan de Azucar (Sugar Loaf Hill) measures 423 meters (1,378 feet) and many travelers climb it to get the most spectacular panoramic views, photographing Uruguay's natural beauty. A nature reserve conserves the area's flora and fauna ever since 1980 and the zoo here is as delight for the ones traveling with young ones. The Cerro del Toro is the second highest hill in the range at 250 meters above sea level. Because it is a source of mineral water it was baptized with a name of a water zodiacal sign. The Cerro del Ingles can be translated as English Hill; also known as San Antonio the 135 meter giant has a chapel on top.
Admire Piria's work and enjoy your time in Piriapolis, a popular summer destination and Uruguay's ''Resort of the Future''.
